The New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops -- which this year ended its neutral stance on domestic partnership legislation and came out against SB12 -- tried to work out a compromise with bill supporters in the final hours before the vote. However, by Thursday afternoon it became apparent that the deal couldn't be closed.
The bishops' opposition was a leading factor in the lopsided margin of Thursday's 17-25 vote.
