Former Congresswoman Heather Wilson still hasn't decided whether she'll be running for governor, she just said in an interview on KUNM a few minutes ago.
Wilson probably would enter the race as a frontrunner on name recognition alone. She served 10 years in the House, representing the 1st Congressional District, which mainly consists of Albuquerque. She gave up that swing-district seat to run for U.S. Senate last year but lost to Steve Pearce in a hard-fought GOP primary where Pearce painted her as a "liberal."
Republican candidates so far include former GOP Chair Allen Weh, Las Cruces District Attorney Susana Martinez, State Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones and public-relations company owner Doug Turner.

Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish already has over 6,000 signatures on her nominating petition, so Wilson (and the rest of the R's) had better get cracking.
ReplyDeleteIt would make for a good show if she ran, but it would not change the outcome in the general election. New Mexico will not soon elect a republican governor again. And Heather cannot win a statewide race in a general election. I can just imagine her numbers in the northern part of the state.
ReplyDeleteDenish can be defeated, but this isn't Heathers year as the R's have two very viable female candidates - we'll need Heather in the Senate in 2012 or 2014. Denish got signatures the same way Marty did - and he tubed it. This is NOT a good time to be an entrenched Democrat.
ReplyDeleteThe Democrats in Albuquerque got 55% of the total vote. They blew it because of 'spoiler Nader' Romero.
